For the NA48 collaboration
Talk presented at the 25th International Nuclear Science Symposium, Tokyo, 3-6 December 1996
The NA48 experiment at CERN aims at measuring direct CP violation in neutral
kaon decays with a precision of on the parameter
,
corresponding to a factor 3 improvement with respect to previous experiments.
This is achieved by a significant increase in the size of the data sample and
by a corresponding reduction in the systematic error, using techniques which
greatly reduce experimental biases on the result.
The principle of the experiment and the performance of some detector
components is presented.
